Cardiac risk belongs at the center

Arrhythmia risk is a safety issue that cannot be answered by a testimonial, a marketing claim, or a broad statement that a treatment is “natural.”

Ibogaine has been associated with changes in cardiac electrical activity, including QT interval prolongation, which can increase concern about dangerous rhythm disturbances in susceptible circumstances. Discussions about programs beyond the United States, including ibogaine beyond Mexico, should still return to the same questions: what is independently documented, what standards apply, and how are adverse outcomes handled? Claims tied to athletes, such as football-related ibogaine accounts, boxer testimonials, or MMA-focused stories, may be part of public debate but do not replace clinical evidence.

Terms worth using precisely

Arrhythmia

An abnormal heart rhythm. Some rhythm changes can be clinically serious, especially when combined with other risk factors or medications.

QT interval

A measurement on an electrocardiogram related to the heart’s electrical recovery cycle. Prolongation can be associated with risk of certain dangerous arrhythmias.

Adverse event

An unwanted medical occurrence during or after an intervention. A report of an adverse event does not automatically prove cause, but it must be investigated and documented.
